16th Judicial Court Seal
Redesigning a Symbol of Justice
challenge
The 16th Judicial Circuit Court approached Design Ranch to create a more distinctive and ownable identity. The existing seal borrowed heavily from the Missouri state seal and lacked a strong connection to the court and its Kansas City home. The opportunity was to create an identity that conveyed the authority and tradition of the judicial system while drawing inspiration from the iconic Art Deco architecture of Kansas City City Hall.
Approach
Drawing from the architectural details and Art Deco character of City Hall, Design Ranch created a new seal centered around the traditional scales of justice, reimagined with forms and details found throughout the building. The new seal became the foundation for a broader identity system, including a refined color palette, typography, and brand standards designed to create a consistent and recognizable presence across communications used by the court, its staff, and judges.
